In a heartwarming surprise, W.D. Williams Elementary’s Kassandra Cumming was named the 2025 Buncombe County Schools Media Center Coordinator of the Year. Surrounded by Principal Christy Jones and district leaders, Ms. Cumming received the honor in recognition of her unwavering commitment to literacy and learning - especially in the face of adversity.

Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, Ms. Cumming stepped up in a big way. She turned the school’s media center into a welcoming space, and made it her mission to get books into the hands of every student. Whether through book giveaways, classroom collaborations, or after school reading clubs, Ms. Cumming ensured stories were still reaching young minds.

“Ms. Cumming has been instrumental to her school,” said District Media and Blended Learning Specialist Lila Morel. “She partnered with several outside organizations to bring books. Ms. Cumming works hard to make sure the media center is a safe and welcoming place. She embodies everything this award stands for.”

When the surprise squad came into the media center, Ms. Cumming was in shock to receive this award, as this is only her second year in the role.

“We care about literacy, community, and showing a lot of love for reading at Buncombe County Schools,” she said. “I am so happy to have been chosen for this award. Books have the power to comfort, inspire, and connect us - and I’m honored to be a part of that work.”

Ms. Cumming’s recognition shines a spotlight not only on her achievements, but on the critical role media center coordinators play in supporting students academically and emotionally. Her story is a powerful reminder that even in the storm’s aftermath, a good book and a great educator can help light the way forward.
