Third graders at Black Mountain Primary (BMP) took a step back in time as they portrayed influential figures throughout history. The school’s auditorium was filled with an assortment of historical figures for an entire day. Museum visitors learned about Jackie Robinson, Dolly Parton, Bethany Hamilton, the Vanderbilt family, and many more.
The living wax museum is a long standing tradition at BMP and is known around the school as a rite of passage for all third grade students. A lot of research goes into each student’s historical figure. Students study famous, innovative, and creative people and learn about their biographies and most notable qualities.
“This event is special to our students and school as it has been going on for several years,” said third grade teacher Kristy Lindsey. “The students become experts on their historical figures, and share what they learned in the ‘Living Wax Museum’ presentations.”
Students had to prepare and memorize a speech, create posters highlighting their figures' lives, and creatively dress in costumes that closely resemble each person. Although the assignment is a lot of fun, it does present its own challenges.
“For some students this is the first research project that they have done,” said Ms. Lindsey. “This project is a great way to learn more about historical figures as the third graders bring history to life. We invite students’ families and the rest of the school to come visit the museum. Everyone learns something new!”
